Eight central Indiana high schools have earned an appearance – with either a Bronze or Silver Medal – on U.S. News & World Report’s list of “America’s Best High Schools.” According to U.S. News, the list is “based on key principles that a great school must serve all its students… and that it must be able to produce measurable academic outcomes…”

Only one Indiana high school, Signature School, in Evansville, earned a Gold Medal. Ranking 53rd, Signature School has a College Readiness Index of 76.4.
Analysts from School Evaluation Services (an educational data research unit of Standard & Poor’s) developed the three-step school ranking methodology. Steps one and two looked at each school’s students’ performance relative to the state’s “average”; step three used Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate test data as the benchmarks for calculating the “College Readiness Index.”
For as many ranking methods as there may be, I’m certain there are at least as many critics. But if the list inspires one school, one teacher, or one student to reach a little higher in 2010, then I say it’s worth the buzz!
